HOW TO USE MEGADISC
*********************
WELCOME to the first Magazine-on-a-Disc produced in Australia.
We've tried hard to make this disc easy to handle, by using some
excellent utilities such as the one called TICON, which brings up this
screen. We have been given permission by Pete Goodeve, its creator, to
continue using this nifty little utility. Most of the contents of
MEGADISC are as easy to trigger as this one, and those that aren't will
be carefully explained.
Throughout MEGADISC, we have used a few conventions you should
know about. In discussions of using the CLI (in the CLIstuff drawer),
you will see mention of typing in various commands, which will be
displayed in a form similar to this: 1> type filename
Here the " 1> " indicates the CLI prompt which might have a number other
than 1; and "filename" can of course be any file (text, graphics, etc.).
Generally speaking, the way to access the various features of
MEGADISC is to double-click on (open) any icon. If you open a text file
it will appear in a second or two, and to move to the next page down,
just hit "Return". At the end of the file, press "Ctrl-C" to exit, as
indicated at the bottom of the file. If you should want to exit from
reading a text file without pressing Return till the end, simply press
CTRL-C and RETURN, then CTRL-C again.
If you open a drawer, it will open into a new window containing
other icons which you can then select. Any icon with a question mark on
it indicates some kind of explanatory text file.
It is useful to know that if you move any selectable icon in
MEGADISC to another place, it may not be instantly selectable.
The PROGRAMS drawer contains a number of AmigaBasic programs,
which should be of interest to anyone even vaguely interested in
programming. You'll find all necessary details in the Intro file in
the PROGRAMS window.
The ARTGALLERY drawer contains pics which can be viewed by simply
double-clicking the icon as usual. To exit from any image click once in
the top left corner. These pictures all use the Dpaintx.exe utility
as their default tools. This has been provided by:
Peter L Dunlap
P.O. Box 444,
Indian Hills, CO 80454-0444, U.S.A.
The icon you see for it can be dragged onto your own disks. The utility
will only work on lo-res pictures in the IFF format.
We've provided a schematic picture for assembling a simple
switchbox which enables you to direct the sound output to either your
monitor, or some other sound system. You'll find this in the ARTICLES
drawer - most of the parts should be available for about $10, but if you
you'd like us to arrange it at a very low price, please write and ask.
PRINTING HARDCOPY - If you'd like to print out some or all of the
articles on MEGADISC2, read the DuIII.txt in this drawer. If you do
print everything out, you'll get approximately 52 close-printed pages,
so be warned. We think you'll find this a very useful utility that
hovers between the speed/range of the CLI, and the ease of use of the
Workbench.
The format we've devised for MEGADISC is as manageable as we can
make it, and is set up for 80 columns across the screen. If, currently,
your WorkBench is in 60 column mode, you should change it to 80 by
selecting the Preferences icon, and on the left side of the first
Preferences screen, select the 80 gadget, then SAVE.
If you have any trouble in using the disc, or have any suggestions
for improving the format in any way, we'd like to hear from you.
In the meantime, we hope you get you money's worth.
